I recently re-read the Infinity Abyss. And I once again remembered why the triangle of Thanos, Adam Warlock, and Jim Starlin changed the way, I not only read comic books, but anything in general.
The intricate way that Jim Starlin write, accompanied by his unique art can open a world that is really hard to escape from. He makes everything so real and vivid. Not just by either his writing or his art, but by the combination of both that creates a relaity within fiction. His writings are most often cosmic and universal, far-fetched and bizzare. Yet still these ideas and writing really make the reader think about the world around him and the possiblities of what this universe is really like.
Thanos and Adam Warlock are just an interesting pair. Thanos was Jim Starlin's creation, who first appeared in Iron Man #55. A creation of evil, that in my opinion was like none other villian up to his time, save maybe the Joker of DC Comics. Yet despite all his evil, he is still understandable. His reasons for doing what he does are not physcotic, like the Joker, but precise, planned-out and carried through.
But Adam Warlock on the other hand. Although emerging from a caccon in the Beehive in Fantastic Four #67, as an indifferent villian, he has come to be known as the many times savior of the Marvel Universe. And that is thanks to Jim Starlin's writing of Adam Warlock. Before Jim Starlin began writing the pages of Power of Warlock, the book was set to be cancelled, and the story that Jim Starlin wrote for it was going to be the last. But because of the response to what Jim Starlin wrote, the series continued. Although eventually ended, Adam Warlock has enjoyed many apperances in other books, as well as mini-series, and cross-overs. The most well know being the Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, and Infinity Abyss.
A little bit of my opinion on the writings of Jim Starlin.
